How do you find this town located in southern Alberta? Well, it’s located on Highway 3 and it’s approximately 100km north of the United States border, 320 km southeast of Calgary and 51 km southwest of Medicine Hat.

From Edmonton 5 hr 29 min (537.3 km) via AB-36 S From Calgary 3 hr 10 min (303.6 km) via Trans-Canada Hwy/AB-1 E Not too bad of a drive in my opinion, and it’s also a great pit stop.

Known for

Meet the town mascot “Pinto MacBean”. Yes, he was named after the pinto bean. Bow Island is known for the dry edible bean industry. The mascot is located next to Highway No. 3 and is the first to greet visitors.

Pinto Macbean was designed by Jane Osborne and was revealed to the public in 1992. Jon Pinto, an artist that used to work for Walt Disney, created a cartoon version for the town to use on its 100th Centennial Celebration. The artist brought together features from familiar cartoons such as eyes like M & M characters and limbs like veggie tales.

Fun Fact! Bow Island was actually supposed to be given to an actual island. It's located at the confluence of Bow Oldman rivers, just north of Grassy Lake. Due to an error, Grassy Lake and Bow Island were mixed up.
